How to Remove Ghost Followers on Instagram (Fake & Inactive Accounts)
By InstantFollowerTracker.com Team · · 5 min read

Not every follower is a real, active person. Some accounts followed you years ago and haven't opened Instagram since. Others were never real at all: bots, spam profiles and fake accounts created to boost numbers or send scam messages.
These are ghost followers. They inflate your follower count without ever liking, commenting or watching your content. And because engagement rate is calculated against your total followers, they make your account look less engaging than it really is.
Here's how to identify ghost followers on Instagram, remove them safely, and keep new ones away.
Why ghost followers are a problem
- They lower your engagement rate. If 30% of your followers are ghosts, your likes and comments look 30% smaller relative to your audience size.
- They distort your data. Insights about audience location, age and active times get skewed by fake accounts.
- Brands notice. Creators who work with brands are often evaluated on engagement rate and audience quality. Lots of fake followers is a red flag.
- Spam accounts can target your followers. Bots that follow you sometimes mine your follower list for scam DMs.
| Followers | Interactions per post | Engagement rate | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Before cleanup | 2,000 (incl. 500 ghosts) | 120 | 6% |
| After removing ghosts | 1,500 | 120 | 8% |
Instagram doesn't publish detailed explanations of how its feed ranking works, but it consistently says engagement and interest drive what people see. Followers who never interact add nothing.
How to spot ghost followers
Signs of a fake or spam account
- No profile picture, or a generic stock or stolen photo
- A username with random letters and numbers, like
jessica_83920571 - Zero or very few posts
- Following thousands of accounts but followed by very few
- A bio with suspicious links, crypto offers or "DM me to earn"
- Recently created, often in batches with similar names
Signs of an inactive account
- No posts or stories for a year or more
- Never likes or comments on your posts
- Very old profile picture and bio
Signs that shouldn't worry you
Some real followers rarely engage, especially people who watch stories but never like posts, or friends who scroll quietly. Private accounts may look empty from the outside too. Be cautious about removing real people.
Step 1: Find ghost followers with an Instagram follower tracker
Scrolling through your followers in the app works for small accounts, but it's slow and easy to lose your place. A better approach:
- Download your Followers and following data from Accounts Center in JSON format (step-by-step guide).
- Upload the ZIP to our Instagram follower tracker.
- Open the Fans tab to see followers you don't follow back. Ghost and spam accounts almost always show up here, because you'd never follow them yourself.
- Use the search box to look for suspicious patterns, such as long strings of numbers, and download the list as a CSV to work through at your own pace.
Find suspicious followers in your list
Upload your Instagram data file to see who unfollowed you and who doesn't follow you back. No login, no password, and your data never leaves your device.
Open the Instagram Follower TrackerStep 2: Remove ghost followers safely
For each account you want to remove:
- 1
Find the account
Tap View profile in the tracker, or search your Followers list in Instagram.
- 2
Open your Followers list
Search for the username and tap Remove next to their name.
- 3
Confirm
Tap Remove again. They are not notified and not blocked.
They won't get a notification, and they won't be blocked. They simply stop following you. If the account is clearly spam, you can block or report it instead, which also stops it from following you again.
Go slowly
Removing followers is an action like any other, and Instagram limits how many actions you can take in a short period. Remove a batch, take a break, and continue later. If you see "Try again later" or "We restrict certain activity", stop for a day or two.
Don't use apps that promise to "clean" ghost followers automatically. They need your password and perform bulk actions, which is exactly what gets accounts restricted. Read more in Are Instagram unfollower apps safe?
Step 3: Protect your account from new ghost followers
Make your account private (personal accounts)
With a private account, every new follower has to be approved, so you can decline obvious spam. This works best for personal accounts that don't need public reach.
Filter follow requests and hidden words
In Settings → Privacy you can limit unwanted interactions, filter offensive comments and message requests with Hidden words, and restrict who can tag or mention you.
Never buy followers
Bought followers are almost always fake. They never engage, they lower your engagement rate, and Instagram removes them in regular cleanups, which is one of the main reasons follower counts drop.
Be careful with giveaways and follow-for-follow
Giveaways that only require a follow attract people who don't care about your content and often unfollow afterwards. Require something meaningful instead, such as a comment answering a question related to your niche.
How many followers should you remove?
There's no target number. Focus on:
- Obvious spam and fake accounts: always worth removing.
- Clearly abandoned accounts: no posts and no activity for years.
- Accounts you don't want seeing your content: for any reason.
Leave real people who simply engage quietly. A lurker who watches every story is still a valuable follower.
Will removing ghost followers boost my reach?
It can improve your engagement rate, which makes your account look healthier to brands and collaborators. Whether it boosts reach directly is less clear. Instagram hasn't said that removing inactive followers improves distribution. The bigger wins come from creating content your real audience engages with. See how to grow real Instagram followers.
Track the results
Take a snapshot with the follower tracker before you start cleaning up, and another one a few weeks later. You'll see exactly how many accounts left, how many new followers you gained, and whether your engagement improved. Our guide to tracking follower growth shows how to set this up.
