How to See Who Doesn't Follow You Back on Instagram

Your following list grows quietly. You follow a friend of a friend, a café you visited once, a creator during a giveaway, a brand that ran a clever ad. Months later you're following hundreds or thousands of accounts, and plenty of them have no idea who you are.

Finding out who doesn't follow you back on Instagram is one of the most common reasons people look for an Instagram follower tracker. It's also the easiest list to get, because it only needs a single snapshot of your account. In this guide you'll get the full list in a few minutes, without giving your password to anyone.

The fast way: use an Instagram follower tracker

The idea is simple. Take the list of accounts you follow, remove everyone who follows you, and what's left is your "not following back" list. Doing that by hand is impossible once you follow more than a few dozen accounts, but a tool can do it instantly.

GroupWhat it means
Not following backYou follow them, they don't follow you
FansThey follow you, you don't follow them
MutualsYou follow each other

Step 1: Download your followers and following

Instagram lets you download both lists through Accounts Center:

  1. Go to your profile, tap ☰, then Accounts Center.
  2. Open Your information and permissions → Download your information.
  3. Choose Download or transfer information, pick your Instagram account and select Some of your information.
  4. Check Followers and following, choose Download to device.
  5. Select All time and JSON format, then Create files.

Your file usually arrives within minutes to a few hours. If you get stuck, follow our detailed guide to downloading your Instagram data.

Step 2: Upload it to the tracker

Open the Instagram follower tracker and drop the ZIP file onto the upload box (or select followers_1.json and following.json if you unzipped it). The Not following back tab opens automatically and shows:

  • Every account you follow that doesn't follow you
  • When you followed each one, newest first
  • A View profile button for each account
  • Options to copy all usernames or download the list as a CSV

Everything runs in your browser. Your lists are never uploaded anywhere.

The manual way: check one account at a time

If you just want to check a single person:

  1. Open their profile.
  2. Tap Following.
  3. Search for your username.

If you appear, they follow you. If you don't, they don't. This is fine for a quick check on one person, but it doesn't scale, and it won't work if their account is private and you don't follow them.

Who shows up on a "not following back" list?

Don't be surprised if your list is long. For most people it's mainly made up of:

  • Celebrities, creators and public figures. They have millions of followers and follow very few people. They're never going to follow you back, and that's fine.
  • Brands, shops and media accounts. You follow them for content and deals, not for a mutual relationship.
  • Accounts you followed for a giveaway or contest. These are often the easiest to unfollow.
  • People who unfollowed you. Someone who once followed you back but has since left.
  • Inactive accounts. Profiles that haven't posted or logged in for years.
  • Private accounts that never accepted your request. These usually show up as pending requests instead. The tracker shows them in their own tab.

It's worth sorting by date. Accounts you followed recently might still follow you back, while ones you followed years ago almost certainly won't.

How to clean up your following list without getting restricted

Once you have the list, you might want to unfollow a batch of accounts. Do it carefully: Instagram limits how quickly accounts can follow and unfollow, to fight bots.

Safe cleanup

  • Unfollow in small batches with breaks
  • Do it yourself in the official app
  • Stop for a day or two if you see “Try again later”
  • Keep accounts you genuinely enjoy

Gets accounts restricted

  • Hundreds of unfollows in one sitting
  • Mass-unfollow apps that need your password
  • Following and unfollowing the same accounts repeatedly
  • Ignoring action-block warnings

Unfollow gradually

There's no official published limit, and Instagram adjusts it based on your account's age and behavior. A safe approach is to unfollow in small batches, say a few dozen at a time, with breaks in between, rather than hundreds in one sitting. If you see a message like "Try again later" or "We restrict certain activity", stop for 24 to 48 hours.

From the tracker, tap View profile to open each account in Instagram, then tap Following → Unfollow. You stay in full control, and every action is something you do yourself in the official app.

Never use mass-unfollow apps

Apps that promise to "unfollow everyone who doesn't follow you back in one click" need your login and perform automated actions. That's exactly the behavior Instagram's systems are designed to catch. Read Are Instagram unfollower apps safe? before trying one.

Decide on your own rules

Ask yourself what you want your feed to be. A few common rules people use:

  • Keep creators and brands you genuinely enjoy, even if they don't follow back.
  • Unfollow personal accounts you don't recognize.
  • Unfollow accounts that haven't posted in over a year.
  • Unfollow anyone who unfollowed you after you followed back.

Should you care about people who don't follow back?

Not necessarily. Following is not a contract. Your feed should show you things you enjoy, and many of the best accounts will never follow you back.

That said, there are good reasons to review the list:

  • A cleaner feed. Fewer accounts you don't care about means more posts from people you do.
  • A healthier ratio. If you're building a personal brand, following thousands of accounts that ignore you can make your profile look less established. See Instagram followers vs following ratio.
  • Reconnecting. Sometimes you'll spot a friend who doesn't follow you simply because they never noticed you followed them. A quick message can fix that.

Bonus: find your "fans" too

The same upload also shows the Fans tab: people who follow you but whom you don't follow back. That's often a list of real supporters, old friends or potential collaborators. Scroll through it occasionally. Following back someone who's been engaging with your content for months is a nice gesture.

And if you want to know who stopped following you over time, keep your saved snapshot and upload a new export in a few weeks. The tracker will show who unfollowed you in between.

Frequently asked questions

Why does someone appear in "not following back" when they do follow me?

Your export reflects the moment you downloaded it. If they followed you after that, request a new export. Also double-check the username: people who changed their handle can show up under their old name.

Does the list include private accounts?

Yes. If you follow a private account (they accepted your request) and they don't follow you back, they're on the list like anyone else.

Can I check who doesn't follow back for another account?

Only for accounts you own. You can download data for any account you can log in to through Accounts Center, including a business account you manage.
